Breast is Best
July 11, 2006 on 5:48 am | In Main, Breast Pumps |The New York Times recently ran an article about breast fed babies being less likely to have weight problems later in life compared to those who are not breast fed (research result published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). The studies found that breast-fed children are 20 – 45% less likely to be obese. Some of the theories behind the benefit of breast feeding include; 1) breast milk could program a child’s metabolism, 2) Breast-fed babies learn to regulate their intake of food from an early age, 3) Babies fed with formula are usually encouraged to finish the bottle, whereas breast-fed babies will stop when they have had enough.
I breast-fed my own children and found the experience rewarding. I did find though that breast-feeding was a huge commitment and required my attention and time around the clock. I made use of a manual breast pump (this was around 20 years ago) but it was not much good, so I gave it up. Sadly, I also gave up breast-feeding sooner than I would have liked. This brings me to my point about breast-feeding. Breast-feeding becomes extremely difficult for woman if they lead active lives or have decided to go back to work. Infants need feeding every two hours so leaving home becomes a challenge if there is nowhere to feed baby while they are out. That is where the marvelous invention of breast pumps becomes an important commodity and today breast pumps have improved dramatically. The variety of pumps and the choice of different brands makes a mothers life a lot easier than I had it 20 years ago. Today, some mothers consider breast pumps as important as nappies (diapers), baby wipes and even car seats.
The flexibility a breast pump offers woman who want to breast feed regardless of their active lifestyle, can mean the difference between breast-feeding or not breast-feeding. Because breast-feeding has been recognized as an important basic nurture and nature function for various reasons, I believe women should be encouraged to breast-feed. I find it interesting how some people are offended by breast-feeding mothers who might sometimes show a little flesh during feeding but they are completely content with the amount of flesh they see on the streets and on our beaches. Most women breast-feed as discreetly as possible while millions of young ladies today do their best to show as much as they can get away with, without being arrested for public indecency. Makes you think, doesn’t it?
