Hiring a car in Rome isn't something to be undertaken lightly. The mechanics are easy enough; you simply need to be over 21, have held your license for over a year, and be able to produce a credit card as security. Then you're metaphorically thrown to the lions.

Judging by the rows of dented and gnarled chassis that line the streets, you'd be forgiven for thinking that Rome 's hosting an enormous stock car race. Except for one thing; nothing's moving. Rome 's appalling road safety record is something of a miracle considering that most of the city's streets are in perpetual gridlock. Nevertheless you're fifty times more likely to die in Rome in a traffic accident than in London.

If you consider that most of Rome's 'must sees' are within walking distance of each other, and that much of the city centre is closed to traffic, then you may want to reconsider hiring a car. However, anyone foolhardy enough to give it a go should bear in mind a couple of things:

Firstly you'll do well to forget The Highway Code, and instead follow the proverbial advice that dictates When in Rome do as the Romans. In this case it means: keeping an eye out for suicidal scooter riders, understanding that fellow road users prefer using the horn to the break, and that all notions of 'lane discipline' should be thrown out of the window. On a more serious note: if you're flashed at a junction it's just to let you know that another car is hurtling towards you, and shouldn't be taken as a sign to pull out. Seat belts are compulsory, and while you may get the feeling that you're the only person in Rome wearing one, the carabinieri seem to relish the opportunity to fine il touristi.

Parking shouldn't present too much of a problem if you go down the pay and display route (there's plenty of free parking, but if you don't understand the language you may end up being towed away). Rome is also able to boast some impressive car theft statistics, so don't leave anything in your vehicle. Petrol is available round the clock at self service stations, although you'll often find them 'unofficially manned' by people hoping to earn a tip. Booking your car hire in advance will save you as much as 50%. Scooters (up to 125cc) and motorcycles can be easily hired for anyone with a real death-wish.
