Flights to Rome - City Break
Finding cheap flights to Rome has never been easier. Thanks to the Internet overheads have come down, the 'middle man' has been cut out, and the boom in low cost airlines continues apace. If you're prepared to shop around (unfortunately there aren't any shortcuts), and are flexible with your travel times, it's possible to pick up a return ticket to Rome for less than it will cost you to get to the airport.
Booking in advance is always a good way to ensure that you get the cheapest flight possible, and the Internet is no exception - unless of course you choose to go down the 'last minute' route. Budget airlines are a good starting point, but there are also several websites (such as opodo ) selling seats on scheduled flights at very competitive prices. Other well trodden paths include: leafing through the travel pages of the Sunday broadsheets, looking on Teletext , or even paying a visit to your local travel agent.
Often with no-frills airlines you can find yourself miles away from your intended destination, having landed in a provincial airport way out in the sticks. In Rome the opposite is true. The capital is served by two airports Ciampino and Fiumicino (also dubbed Leonardo da Vinci).
The lion's share of charter flights (including ryanair, thomsonfly and easyjet) fly to Ciampino, which is just 15km from the city centre. The easiest way to get into Rome from Ciampino is to catch the Terravisione shuttle bus to Termini Station. Bus departures are synchronized with flights and tickets cost €8.00 one-way and €13.50 return. It is possible to catch the train or the metro, but you'll need to finish the journey with an additional bus trip.
Most scheduled flights from the UK land at Fiumicino airport, 32km outside the city. This makes taking a taxi a relatively expensive business (it's likely to set you back at least €40.00). The Leonardo Express train runs every half hour and takes 35 minutes to get to Termini Station. At €8.80 one-way the train's cheaper, and much quicker, than the Terravisione shuttle bus.
