New York is a big city with a big personality and, if you're stretched for time, it can be difficult knowing where to start and how you're going to cram everything in. To help you get the most out of your short break we recommend taking the following bite out of the big apple:
The Statue of Liberty is arguably America 's most enduring icon, not bad for a French lady weighing 225 tons, who is well over one hundred years old. Liberty comes at a price and in this case it's the 354 steps to the viewing point in her crown. To avoid the crowds it's best to arrive early.
The Empire State Building is the aesthetic high point of Manhattan 's skyline and at 449m it's also one of its loftiest buildings. Thrown up in a phenomenal 410 days; the building's almost as good to look at as the views from the 102 nd storey viewing platform.
Times Square is as much a part of the city as salt-beef bagels and surly cab drivers, and while the ' Great White Way ' is undoubtedly something of a tourist trap; it's got the best collection of neon this side of Tokyo .
Central Park is the city's much loved playground. Marooned in a sea of concrete and traffic the park provides a 843-acre breath of fresh air, however with a constant procession of rollerbladers, joggers and Frisbees whizzing past life is far from sleepy in the city's Eden.
A Mecca for art-buffs, New York 's Museum of Modern Art corrals together the best collection of contemporary canvases on the face of the planet. The competition is stiff, but for many the works by Picasso and Van Gogh steal the show. Entire weekends can be lost in the American Museum of Natural History, which sprawls over four blocks and contains more than 30 million artifacts.
Chinatown is one of the city's best-loved and most densely populated districts. It's stuffed with decent restaurants where you'll find that your dimes go a very long way indeed.
New York 's skyline doesn't get much better than when seen from the gothic masterpiece of Brooklyn Bridge (incidentally the world's first steel-cabled suspension bridge).
