How to get to Bruges
By sea
The nearest ferry port is at Zeebrugge which is only 14 kilometres from Bruges. P&O Ferries run a service from Hull to Zeebrugge. For information about crossing times and fares visit the P&O web site at www.poferries.com.
You can also cross the channel from Dover to Calais . Calais is in France and is about 100 kilometres from Bruges . The road link between Calais and Bruges is excellent and only takes about an hour and a half by car. For information about crossing times and fares visit the P&O Stena Line web site at www.posl.com
By the channel tunnel
The link to Europe from the UK has been completely transformed by the channel tunnel. If you are coming from the UK by car you can drive on to a train at Folkestone and within 20 minutes be driving off at Calais without even getting out of your car. For further information about the tunnel visit www.eurotunnel.com
By car
If you are coming by car from the ferry port at Calais or the channel tunnel, take the E40/A16 from Calais and then take the turn off to Bruges on the E40/A10. If you are coming from the ferry port at Zeebrugge take the N17. If you are coming from Brussels or Ostend take the E40 (A10).
Bruges is clearly signed posted from the E40. Bruges has an inner ring road (the E30) which follows the course of the old city walls. Although the centre of Bruges with its limited parking is well signposted from the E30, you will be encouraged to abandon your car in favour of one of the large car parks provided on the edge of the city. The biggest and cheapest is by the railway station and the price includes a bus ride in to the centre of town. It is deliberately cheap to encourage motorists to use it and thus reduce the amount of traffic in the city centre.
By train
Bruges railway station is at Stationsplein about one mile south of the city centre. Most of the local buses from the station go the main square called the Markt right in the centre of Bruges . Bruges is actually in a Flemish speaking part of Belgium and so you may need to look for the Flemish name of Brugge when you check the destination/departure boards at a railway station.
To get to Bruges by train from London you can either take the Eurostar from Waterloo Station to Lille in northern France and then change to a local train service to Bruges or you can go by Eurostar to Brussels and then take an intercity service to Bruges . Eurostar is the name of the company which operates the channel tunnel passenger train service. The service from Lille to Bruges also connects with the TGV service from Paris . For further information about the Eurostar service visit www.eurostar.com
The Belgian national network of trains provides frequent services between Bruges and other Belgian cities such as Ghent , Antwerp and Ostend . International services to Bruges include the Thalys high-speed train from Paris via Brussels and the international (INT) train from Cologne to London via Bruges and Ostend.
