Bruges Festival of World Music
This is first-rate world music festival held for four days in the last week of February in the Stadsschouwburg. The festival has a reputation for seeking out up-and-coming talent.
March
Cinema Novo Film Festival
This is held the third week in March and is dedicated to films from Latin America, Asia and Africa . Since it was started in 1983 it has become one of Belgium 's most important film festivals. The 60 plus films are shown at the Cinema Lumi è re in St. Jakobstraat and Cin é Liberty in Kuiperstraat. For more information about the films on show this year visit www.cinemanovo.be

Meifoor Brugge
This is Bruges ' main annual funfair which runs from the middle of April to the middle of May. It is held on ‘t Zand and in the adjoining park.
May
Heilig-Bloedprocessie (Procession of the Holy Blood)
This colourful festival takes place every year on Ascension Thursday which is 40 days after Easter and typically in the middle of May. It is when the relic of the holy blood is carried through the streets of Bruges followed by local people dressed in medieval costume re-enacting biblical scenes. The procession begins and ends at the Chapel of the Holy Blood. For further information visit www.holyblood.org

Cactus Festival
This three-day open air world music festival is held during the second weekend in July from Friday to Sunday in Minnewater Park . It features a range of international bands some better known than others. For more information visit www.cactusmusic.be
Nationale Feestdag Belgie (Belgian National Day)
This is public holiday throughout Belgium and is celebrated in Bruges with a Big Band concert and shows at a variety of venues around Bruges .
Early Music Festival of Flanders
This is a two-week festival of early classical music which starts at the end of July and finishes in early August. Concerts take place at numerous venues throughout Bruges including the Concertgebouw, the Provinciaal Hof in the Markt and several churches. For ticket information visit www.tinck.be

Reiefeesten (Festival on the Canals)
The Festival on the Canals takes place once every three years and the next one is in 2004. Events take place in the evening when you can wander around the illuminated canals and watch historic tableaux. There are also plenty of other events including dancing and open air concerts. Kantdagen (Lace Days)
The lace maker days in the middle of August include demonstrations of lace making and the sale of lace in Walplein and Wijngaardplein in Bruges . For further information visit www.kantcentrum.com
Jazz Brugge
A four-day jazz festival held in the Concertgebouw on ‘t Zand. The emphasis is on contemporary and avant-garde music performed by well-known and up-and-coming musicians.
Klinkers
Klinkers is Bruges ' biggest festival with concerts on the Markt and the Burg and smaller performances in bars and cafes. Most of the events are free and everyone is out to enjoy themselves. It goes on for two-and-half weeks usually starting in the last weekend of July.

Kerstmarkten (Christmas Markets)
During the Christmas period (from the beginning of December to the beginning of January) Christmas markets take place in the Markt in the centre of the city.
Feast of Santa Claus
St. Nicholas (also known as Santa Claus) takes to the streets on 6 th December (St Nicholas's Day) and goes into schools disguised as the Bishop of Myra with his blacked-up sidekick Zwarte Piet (Black Peter). Traditionally children receive their main Christmas presents and the traditional Flemish biscuits called speculoos on this day.
