As you would expect from Europe 's most popular city break destination there's plenty of accommodation to suit every taste and wallet. However things haven't always been this way, and until recently there's been a noticeable gap at the top end of the market. Today there's ample scope for refined old-world charm, cutting-edge design, or roughing it on a shoestring.
If you're planning a few days in Barcelona booking accommodation in advance isn't just recommended; it's essential. The city's recent boom in tourism means that 'vacancy' signs are as rare as hen's teeth, and unless you're prepared to do a lot of legwork on arrival it's best to organize everything before you leave. The Internet is a good starting point for checking availability and prices.
If you arrive with nowhere to stay the Tourist Office in Plaça de Catalunya will be able to give you a list of recommended hotels and you'll find that most hoteliers speak at least a modicum of English. Alternatively you can try the nearby hotel reservations office (there's a second branch at the airport) who will ring around for you.
With such competition it's hardly surprising that rooms in Barcelona aren't cheap. At the bottom end of the market you should be able to get a bed in a hostel for about €15, while a Spartan double room in a bog-standard pension will set you back somewhere between €30 - 50. A night's accommodation in as mid-range hotel generally falls between €50 - 25. As the number of stars increases the sky really is the limit; so make sure you know what you're letting your bank balance in for.
Accommodation in Barcelona is officially divided into two categories: p ensiónes (typically family run lodgings rated on a two star system) and hotels (all rooms must be en-suite and establishments are rated on a five star system). Several agencies let out flats in the city centre which can be an economic way to spend a few days if you are planning to visit Barcelona with a few friends.
