Not so long ago Prague's motley collection of hotels was a favourite target for guidebook writers. However, in recent years their reputation has taken a welcome turn for the better and today you should have no difficulty finding something tailored to all tastes and budgets.
Luxury is one of Prague's strong points, but it comes with a hefty price tag. The Savoy (in the historic district of Hradcany) has long been one of Prague's most desirable addresses and oozes the kind of elegance that you'd expect from one of the biggest names in the business. The Savoy's guestbook reads like a copy of Who's Who and includes luminaries as diverse as David Bowie and Jacques Chirac, all of whom have been willing to part with anything from € 300-1000 for a night's accommodation. Despite being a relative newcomer to Prague's luxury hotel scene, The Four Seasons has quickly established itself as a popular choice. Perhaps it's got something to do with the hotel's riverside location, its spectacular views of the castle, or maybe it's the well-appointed health club and spa.
In Prague's 'mid-range' hotel bracket it's often difficult to see the correlation between the cost of a room and what you get for your money. Standards vary wildly, which isn't necessarily bad news, but it means that you've got to do your homework first. For location and atmosphere it's difficult to beat the Hotel Cloister Inn (housed in a renovated convent in the Old Town), while anyone looking for a quiet break should head for the 3-star Dientzenhofer Pension (named after the city's most famous architectural son who moved here in 1685). Both hotels get booked up quickly during the high season.
Prague's budget options are dotted across the city, so it's best to phone and check availability in advance rather than slog across town with a heavy backpack. During the summer months a number of schools open their doors to provide dormitory beds, otherwise there's a choice of pensions or hostels. Seasoned favourites include: the Traveller's Hostel-Pension Dlouhá (where centrally located single rooms cost €28, while dorm beds go for €8), and Hostel ESTEC Strahov (near Strahov Stadium).
