Hotel accommodation is likely to be your single biggest expense when staying in London, no matter whether you're hoping to live like a member of the Royal family for a couple of nights or are prepared to rough it.
London's top market accommodation is among the best in the world and comes with one of the heftiest price tags. Names such as The Ritz and The Savoy are synonymous with old world class, while other top players such as Claridge's and No.5 Maddox Street have become shorthand for luxury. Anyone with more contemporary tastes will be pleased to find out that the 'design hotel' phenomena hasn't passed London by, with flagship establishments including the Mandarin Oriental and Ian Schrager and Philippe Starck's Sanderson. Unfortunately Paul McCartney's lyric that 'the best things in life are free' doesn't ring true when it comes to the capital's best hotels, and a night's accommodation will set you back anything for £350.00 upwards.
The most fertile hunting ground for London's mid-range hotels is the area to the south of The British Museum known as Bloomsbury. The central location means that you're near the action although there isn't all that much going on in Bloomsbury itself - which at least guarantees a good night's sleep.
Budget travellers face quite a challenge finding decent, cheap accommodation. If a hotel is beyond your financial reach the next best bet is either a Bed and Breakfast or hostel. If you haven't already booked your accommodation, and are having difficulty finding somewhere cheap to stay it's worth exploring the areas around Earl's Court, Victoria and London Bridge stations. With a backpack strapped to your back you're likely to be targeted by a hotel tout in any of the major stations; they're best avoided as what they have to offer rarely represents good value for money. The UK's official hostel association (the YHA) has hostels in The City and Wimbledon, although the fill up quickly so it's worth booking in advance. Hostel accommodation should cost somewhere in the region of £30.00 per night, while B&B's start around the £50.00 mark.
