Emperor Caligula demanded that the highest officials of the Roman administration gave him gifts. He was originally given branches of evergreen taken from the grove of the goddess of Strenia. The Emperor expressed his dislike for olive leaves and soon after started to receive gifts of cake and honey. These gifts symbolized the wish that the New Year would be full of sweetness, and gifts of gold were also given as a symbol of prosperity.

According to legend, the infant Jesus himself gave gifts and is said to have received offerings of frankincense, myrrh and gold from the three wise men when he was born. This gave rise to Christmas day being an occasion for giving and receiving presents; an occasion for Christians to celebrate the birth of Christ.

As time has evolved so too have the types of presents that we exchange at Christmas. Whilst cakes, fruit, clothing and dolls were the modest gifts that were traditionally given, we now give and receive a whole host of weird and wonderful items.
