Wedding Ring Designs - The Choice

There is a huge variety of wedding ring designs to choose from which can be very confusing. While it is a good idea to keep an open mind while you are on the lookout for the ring for your big day, it is useful to have a rough idea of what is out there. A bewildering array of metals, gems and styles are possible. To select a design that is right for you, think about your personal requirements, tastes and budget. For those who would like to celebrate their marriage with a unique wedding ring design, consider designing your own wedding ring .

Most people go for a plain simple band with little decoration for their wedding ring. This has the advantage of going with everything else in your clothes and jewelry collection, and never goes out of style. However, those with individual tastes may prefer something a little more distinctive. Even plain bands have different shapes, finishes and colors. Bands can be flat or slightly rounded to give a D shape if it was intersected. The edges of the band can be slightly rounded for 'comfort fit' to make it more comfortable to wear.

For different colors, either use different metals or the same metal in different colors. Gold wedding rings are available in yellow, white (for a silvery look) or rose (a soft pink color). Titanium wedding rings are generally dark silver but can be bought in various different colors if the metal is treated. Platinum wedding rings are expensive but platinum is a good metal for high quality jewelry and can be used for setting gemstones. For a plain, cheap wedding ring , consider buying a silver wedding ring. The band does not have to be one color throughout - if two different colors are used, this is known as two-tone. One option is a flat, outer band with an inner band in a different color set in the outer band. Another way of distinguishing a pattern is to use a different finish for one part of the ring. Different finishes are matt, satin or polished. A matt finish gives a textured, darker look. For a satin finish the metal is finely brushed for a finer look than the matt finish. A polished finish is very bright and shiny, and needs to be maintained by regular polishing.

For decoration the wedding band can be set with gemstones or have patterns engraved or embossed on them. Bands can be set with a single large gem (a solitaire) or have smaller gems (accents), or a combination of one large gem combined with smaller ones. Solitaires are available in different shapes, for instance round, oval, square or heart-shaped. Stones with a strong color such as rubies or traditional deep blue sapphires are usually set with smaller diamonds round them. Diamond wedding rings, or rings using other gemstones, need to use a strong metal such as platinum or gold to hold the stones.

Other wedding ring designs are Celtic wedding rings which use traditional Irish designs for a more unusual look. Russian wedding rings consist of three bands which are interlocked. These can all be one color or three different colors. For instance you could have a Russian ring made with three different types of gold: white, yellow and rose. Antique wedding rings take their inspiration from different art movements and eras for their wedding ring designs.
