Gold is one of the world's most precious metals and prized because of its beauty, durability, and resistance to tarnishing and corrosion. Gold is used in industry but is also used to make gold wedding rings in different colors and styles. Its elasticity makes is easy to work with for fine jewelry. Gold's warm color and beauty has made it valued by man throughout the ages. Gold is regarded as a symbol of wealth. It can be alloyed with other metals to create different colors such as yellow, white, pink (rose gold) or green. Because it is so malleable, it can be twisted or melted into any shape.

Gold's purity is measured in carats (k), the highest purity being 24k which is pure 100% gold. 24k gold is considered too soft for jewelry so gold is alloyed with other metals for increased strength and to give variations in color. Gold jewelry should be marked with the proportion of pure gold to other metals given in the format 18k for instance to denote 18/24 karats gold or, 75% gold. This can also be expressed as 750. The most common purity of gold used in gold jewelry in the US is 14k gold which means that the gold content forms just over half. This is could also be marked as 585 (14k/24k gives 58.33%). Gold must be at least 10k purity to be sold as gold jewelry.

Gold is alloyed with other metals such as copper, zinc, silver, palladium and platinum to strengthen it and give different colors. Adding more copper gives pink color and the resulting alloy is known as rose gold. One particularly well-known combination of gold is adding more silver and/or palladium to give a more silvery color. This alloy known as white gold. White gold wedding rings are particularly popular as it is harder than pure silver so can be used to set gemstones and does not tarnish as easily as silver wedding rings. White gold wedding rings are significantly more expensive than silver ones but are a slightly cheaper alternative to platinum wedding rings. Two-tone or tri-color rings are created using different colors of gold as a contrast. Two-tone rings consist of two colors and tri-colors use three different colors. For instance, Russian puzzle rings can be made using one band made of rose gold, one made of white gold and one of yellow gold. These give a bit more variety than a plain metal band with no decoration. Gold can be engraved allowing the bride and groom to have personal messages engraved on the inside of their gold wedding rings. Gold can have a highly-polished finish, or a brushed finish, or a beaten finish.
