Diamonds, being the hardest gem known to man, are an appropriate symbol of a couple's enduring love for each other. Diamond wedding rings are a classic choice for class, style and elegance. No wonder many people choose a diamond wedding ring to say "I do" on the big day. Diamonds were originally mined in India until mines were found in South Africa in the middle of the 19 th century, and were believed to have had mystical powers. Then, as now, they were seen as a symbol of status, wealth and power.

Diamonds are assessed according to their color, clarity, cut and weight. A diamond's weight is measured in carats; the more carats, the higher the value. When diamonds come out of the mine they are not shiny and need to be cut and polished to create the sparklers we recognize. The diamond must be cut to the correct proportions and the correct angles to reflect the light to its advantage. Most diamonds are white but they can be different shades of white. Colored diamonds are extremely rare and therefore very valuable.

Diamonds are incredibly hard and are used in industry as well as for jewelry. Therefore they need to be kept separate from other jewelry to avoid damaging other, softer gems or metals. One diamond on its own in a simple band looks stunning or a wedding ring can be set with small inlaid diamonds in a pattern around the band. This gives a decorative and unusual variation to the plain metal wedding band. Beware though: large gems can look ostentatious. Diamonds are heavy so have to be set in a strong metal, and are therefore suitable for gold wedding rings or platinum wedding rings. Gold comes in different colors including white gold wedding rings for more silvery look. Small, inset diamonds look good on a gold or platinum wedding band or one diamond can be set on the band.

On the whole diamonds would be more appropriate for use in women's wedding rings, but some men may like them as well. As diamonds are white, they are less obvious than colored gems, and look good with most colors and styles. The can be used in conjunction with other gems: they look very striking with darker gems such as sapphires or rubies. They also never go out of fashion and diamond jewelry can be passed on to future generations. After all, diamonds are forever.

Tips for cleaning diamond wedding rings:

Wash jewelry in warm water with mild detergent and use a toothbrush to scrub it gently. Or soak jewelry in a bowl of water containing one part cold water and one part household ammonia before wiping dry with a clean cloth. Or use jewelry cleaner and follow the manufacturer's instructions
