The wedding ring forms the keynote of the wedding ceremony and symbolizes the couple's commitment to each other for the rest of their married lives. At the critical moment the bride and groom exchange rings and state "with this ring, I thee wed" thus affirming their commitment to each other and their intention to spend the rest of their lives together. Choosing a wedding ring is an important part of the preparations for the wedding.

One of the decisions facing the couple is whether to buy two rings, one for the man as well as the woman, or just one. Men's wedding rings are increasingly common these days. The habit of men wearing wedding rings started during World War II when husbands away from home wore a wedding band as a memento of their wives and families. Some men though prefer not to wear jewelry and do not feel comfortable wearing a wedding ring. Traditionally in some cultures it is believed that women had to wear a ring as a sign of being the property of their husband, so wearing rings lost favor during the years of women's rights and feminism. Oriental potentates used to give their wives puzzle rings to wear which were impossible to put back together if taken off. This was to ensure their wives' loyalty while they were away from home.

People need to choose their wedding ring in a style which suits their personality, tastes and physical shape and size. Someone with a loud, outgoing personality may prefer ostentatious, bold jewelry. Likewise someone more conservative may prefer a classic, simple design. There are different metals, gems, colors, styles and designs available to suit all tastes. The shape and size of the fingers and hands may also affect your choice. People with large, thick fingers should probably go for chunkier rings with a bold design, whereas someone with thin, delicate fingers should go for a more delicate ring style, as a thick, heavy ring would make their finger look as though it would snap.

Wedding rings are sold in jewelers' shops, or online. Some people may prefer to look for a ring they like which isn't necessarily designed to be a wedding ring. Browsing through shops in person, gives you a chance to examine the ring closely and try it on. However shopping online is very convenient and rings can usually be modified or exchanged if they are not quite what you wanted. Look at ring sizes to find out what size you need. It is extremely important that the ring fits properly - if it is uncomfortable to wear, you won't want to wear it again after the wedding day. Rings that are too loose can fall off. If you can't find what you want in the shops, try designing your own ring.
