What is a Wedding Favour?
If you have never been married before and no one close to you has ‘taken the plunge’ recently in the UK, the chances are that you have never heard of one. Hopefully this website will not only inform you of the wedding tradition but will also give you a few unusual ideas to help you organise and personalise your special day.
A wedding favour is a gift from the bride and groom to their guests on their wedding day. It is usually given as a token of thanks for sharing their ‘big day’ with them and also serves as a reminder of the couple's special moment. Wedding favours are traditionally placed at a wedding guest's place setting around the table and can even be combined with the guest's place name. For example; if you decide to have a miniature bottle of whiskey as a wedding favour for your guest then you can tie their name to the top of the bottle and, ‘hey presto’, you have a place name as well! This in turn saves on the costs of printing a traditional name place setting, too.
The History of Wedding FavoursThe wedding favour can be traced back centuries and originated in Europe in the countries of Italy and Greece. They were originally gifts for the guests of weddings, christenings, anniversaries and birthdays. Originally known as ‘bombonières’, they were traditionally used as gifts by the more wealthy Europeans.
‘Bombonières’ were originally gifts of precious stones but as we moved through the centuries they were slowly replaced by a present of sugared almonds. Sugared almonds are still the most popular wedding favour and to this day continue to be placed in fabric pouches and tied elaborately with ribbon for an eye-catching gift. The sugared almonds represent health, wealth, happiness, fertility and long life, signifying a blessing from the bride to her guests.
These days a wedding favour can come in almost any form and can be made to match your colour theme, budget and personality!
Wedding favours are not seen as an essential part to modern day weddings but are seen as an exciting way to thank your guests and an excellent way to show off your individuality and creativity on the day. Your guests will really appreciate a little imagination for their special gift and it is an excellent memento of your special day.
