Pretty much as far from bashful private lingerie as it is possible to get without doing away with it altogether, today's thong is made to be seen by the throng. The French, one nation that was suspicious of thongs long after the British embraced them, are now buying millions each year. Though its associations are sexy, the thong (or to give it its older and inexplicably classier name, the G-string) was born of necessity in ancient times as an athletic support for men. And it still has functional value for its modern day female wearers.

The thong avoids visible pantie line disaster and in its high waisted form is perfectly adapted to the trend for hipster trousers. Indeed, its tiny triangular back has become a feature in its own right. It's intricately decorated with fake, or even real, gemstones and proudly shown off on elite hipster wearers by means of some judicious crouching/bending (particularly when there's paparazzi around). If you can get away with it - and sadly, this is one garment that does require a certain kind of figure - there's something undeniably interesting in a glimpse of underwear on the otherwise fully-dressed. The visible G-string, like its male equivalent of a strip of exposed Calvins, enjoyed a heyday in the first years of the noughties. After Sisqo's 2002 'Thong Song' shot up the charts, Marks and Spencers reported a 50% rise in sales (there's something slightly incongruous about this but we'll let it slide).

The trend reached its zenith, perhaps, with the appearance in some shops of maternity thongs. But over-mainstreaming is the death knell of any fashion. There are strong rumours now that low-cut underwear is on its way back and that the surviving thongs will be relegated to their original purpose of VPL-avoidance. The thong's detractors point out that on anyone with less than ideal proportions (if there is such a thing) the garment can be a source of distress rather than attraction to onlookers. In Brazil, its spiritual home, it is now viewed by many young women as somewhat naff and outdated. Which doesn't mean that if you've already invested in or like the idea of these briefest of briefs you have to shove the thought to the back of your mental drawer. Naff or not, a trip to St Tropez or Copacabana will always provide a chance to display it again, and it does mean a much more even tan.
