There are two reasons for wearing any kind of underwear - practicality and sexuality. And for no item of underwear is this dual function more obvious than in the case of stockings and suspenders. Many kinds of underwear will remain necessary when naughty thoughts are the last thing on your mind, but these days that is never the case with s&s. It's not for nothing that Dim called their 2003 line of stocking and suspender sets the 'Sexy Kit'.

They are special occasion garments. Many women will only wear them on their wedding day, but this is, ideally, the most important day of their life. Yet this famous underwear duo has a long and down-to-earth lineage starting with heavy-duty mediaeval garters designed to hold up woollen or cotton stockings. In 1876 a Parisian designer called Féréol Dedieu patented the suspender belt but it would take a while to catch on, particularly in its country of origin.

The new invention took off in London first of all, thanks to visiting French dancers who scandalised and enthralled their audience with glimpses of stocking-and-suspender adorned thigh. Around the same time the idea of suspenders caught the eye of American manufacturers and by the end of the nineteenth century it was firmly ensconced on both sides of the Atlantic. Women, and foundationwear makers (as underwear was then called), had realised that a corset and suspender combination worked very well as each element helped to keep the others in place. But it was when the bra came along courtesy of Herminie Cadolle in 1889 that the Dedieu's belt idea came into its own and was adopted by such seminal designers as Chanel.

Stockings and suspenders were worn thereafter because of their comfort value, at least until the advent of the mini-skirt in the 1960s, which put paid to them on aesthetic grounds. But the associations of style and sexiness which this combination had gradually accrued thanks to its patronage by just about every famous actress of the twentieth century has given it a firm place in the hearts of well-dressed women everywhere. It is, like Belgian chocolate, best saved for a treat - a treat for you as much as anyone else.
