Good underwear is not just about style and quality, it's about more down-to-earth things like support. As far as sports bras are concerned, we do mean down-to-earth - this is where your bosom will be in a few years' time if you exercise regularly without wearing one. Certain exercises can make a slight difference to your chest area, but once stretched, the ligaments supporting your breasts can never be tightened.

All but the most minimal bosom needs some help in the sporting arena, but the larger the breasts the more important of course support is. And yet, ironically but somehow predictably, the larger sizes of sports bra are the most difficult to find. A properly-fitting, full-cup regular bra is a good alternative.

Don’t wear an underwired bra if you’re going to be exercising for several hours or are playing a contact sport, though, because it will rub. Look for breathable, comfortable fabrics – most sports bras contain Lycra – and if it’s not designed as a sports bra make sure it’s hard wearing. This area of bra design is overlooked by many of the famous lingerie makers, but there are a few good ones out there, plus a variety of attractive activewear to go with them.

DKNY make a cool range of ‘spa wear’, and funky Japanese lingerie company Wacoal make a sports bra with a plunging neck line and concealed wire which goes up to 40 DD. The catch is that it costs over £50. At the other end of the price scale there’s the Sloggi 300 cotton/lycra tops and briefs for about £15 a pair. Triumph International, who make Sloggi, also make their own range of Tri-Action range of sports bras including the Pulsebeat bra, which has a wide band under the bust with hidden attachments for a heart rate monitor. A bonus is that Triumph’s largest Tri-Action sports bra goes up to an F-cup. Berlei’s well-known Shock Absorber range makes use of cutting-edge fabrics such as Coolmax which draws perspiration away from the body. But they don’t forget to make it look good - shorts, briefs, thongs and bras come in matching colours including silver. Shock Absorber is endorsed by Anna Kournikova, although wearing it probably won’t land you Enrique Iglesias, sadly.
