Shelf bras are great for achieving a good balcon, as the French call it, because they are carefully designed to lift and support the bust. The shelf bra has a certain ambience about it – a whisper of the architectural ingenuity of fifties bra designs combined with the more easy going sexuality of the noughties. With a close-fitting sweater or a low-cut top, it will make a statement. Most lingerie manufacturers make at least one, alongside its spiritual cousin, the push-up bra.

You can even buy a camisole with built-in shelf bra from specialty retailer Nordstrom in sizes ranging from small to extra large in very agreeable pastel shades such as pistachio, sky blue and Tivoli pink. A vest/shelf bra ensemble is also available from Bare Essentials – their shoestring singlet is available in several sizes.

Floozie by FrostFrench at UK store Debenhams do some evocative shelf-style printed bras inspired by the seaside – beach huts, parasols and bathing beauties. Janet Reger’s ruffle trim bra is equally evocative – lightly padded and underwired, it looks like the sort of thing that all those sophisticated sunglassed Italian women you see on holiday might wear underneath their black dresses. O Lingerie’s honey half cup underwired bra is sexy too, and comes with matching briefs or thong. The brand also does an underwired bustier in the same style. French lingerie house Chantelle’s vintage-inspired Maestria shelf style is sexy but sophisticated. So is Mystere’s demi-underwired Lara range, with its wide neck and mesh cup. There are matching briefs, thongs or (particularly nice) bikini briefs, but it’s for a special occasion – a set will cost you about £70.

Fifi Chachnil’s little pink boutique modestly tucked away in the Rue Cambon in Paris belies her influence in the lingerie world. Her fifties-inspired shelf bras and little knickers are starry and full of character – much like Ms Chachnil (aka Fifi Veron) herself, who was a singer before she became a lingerie designer and once brought out a record in Egyptian. Fellow French designer Chantal Thomas’ theatre-inspired shelf designs will also provide a sense of occasion.
