The sheer bra really became possible with technological advances in lingerie making in the latter part of the 20th century. The technique of moulding thermoplastic fabrics at temperatures of up to 400 F arrived in the 1960s, but it would take a little longer to achieve the sheer, natural look which became characteristic of the 1970s. A massive symposium on moulded bra manufacture (unlikely as such a thing may seem) took place in Atlanta, Georgia in 1974 and from then on there was no looking back. The technique made it possible to make much finer bras and briefs than had ever been possible before.

New materials as well as new techniques are continuously being developed to add to the repertoire of lingerie makers. To add to transparent chiffon, tulle and lace, we have mesh and microfibres – even a cashmere microfibre from Andres Sarda. There are also patented fibres such that created by a collaboration between Millesia – ever the innovator - and the developer of nylon, Dupont. Silk Milk combines milk fibre (yes) with Lycra to make a durable and luxurious silk muslin. Calvin Klein has used many innovative fabrics such as elasticated tulle, satin microfibre and – the title of a recent range – sheer nylon.

Sheer bras can be worn as a feature in themselves or with the aim of keeping your underwear invisible. Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Hanro have all made flesh-coloured seamless underwired versions. But if you want something slightly more elaborate, there are creations such as Scandale’s tulle Capucine line. Or Simone Perele’s Monaco, which judiciously places embroidered flowers over a sexily sheer base of tulle and fishnet lace. Passionata, the less expensive branch of well-established lingerie house Chantelle, also takes advantage of materials such as tulle and guipure (a kind of lace made of heavily embroidered bits linked by stitches) to make bras which are sheer but not totally revealing – because what you conceal is always as important as what you reveal. Lise Charmel has also used a combination of embroidered flowers and sheer material, as has Gossard, while Huit’s embroidery and tulle bras are ultra-delicate.
