Have sexy thongs sung their swan song? (Sorry. Don’t get your knickers in a twist! Sorry.) If not they’re definitely only hanging by a thread. (Sorry, I really will stop it now.) Boy-cut boxer briefs and feminine little camiknickers are the next big thing. Not that big, but certainly bigger than the thong. The days of a tiny triangle of material poking out of the back of a pair of low-slung combat trousers are more or less over, and it may not be such a bad thing. They have long caused confusion for many, both men and women, who didn’t know where to look when the woman standing next to them on the metro bent down to pick her bag up and treated them to a display of flesh and tripwire which should have been reserved – well, for no one really. This look has never been sexy on any but the sveltest of bodies, and that more or less rings true for the thong in general.

But if you have the bottom for it, thongs can still be worn, and they can still be sexy. If you’re looking for a sexy thong in this fashion climate, go up-market and overtly risqué – Myla, perhaps, or Coco de Mer, or Agent Provocateur. Or try Brazilian-cut lingerie from Exotica. Thongs have been around since the 1940s (although the concept no doubt existed long, long before that) in the form of posing pouches worn by men modelling for life drawing classes. Subterfuges such as body paint and dye are also out, and transgressors could find themselves in court (although not, presumably, still sporting the offending article).
