Considering how difficult to ignore they are in the flesh, it's strange that big bosoms have been ignored for so long by lingerie makers. For a long time a pretty plus-size bra was a rare thing indeed. Many top-end bra ranges do not go higher than a C-cup or even a B-cup. Some of the limitations on bra size are inevitable - brassieres are one of the most technically difficult of all items of clothing to make and some styles may simply be impossible, design-wise, on a more ample figure.

Nonetheless, the range of choice in the bigger bra field is getting ever - well, bigger. We could speculate why: for one thing, demand is always growing as decade upon decade of better nutrition leads to ever taller and more generously proportioned women. And perhaps cultural changes mean women are becoming prouder of their décolletage, large or small. At the same time, ever-improving fabric technology makes yesterday's impossibility today's favourite outfit. But there's another reason for the change in attitudes - pioneers such as Bravissimo's Sarah Tremellen.

Bravissimo was born around the same time as Tremellen's first child, when the Cambridge biology graduate realised that there was a gap in the bra market. It wasn't just maternity bras that were dull and matronly, but larger bras generally. The company now has turnover of several million per year and provides lingerie and swimwear by both mail order and conventional shopping (among other branches, there's one in Covent Garden) for women in the D to JJ-cup range. You can also ask advice from Bravissimo on bra fit and other bust-related subjects - buying a bra, they suggest, is like buying a pair of shoes. The key is to try before you buy, just as you would with shoes.

Have a browse through the internet for shops - there's a lot out there. The high fashion houses are also making bras in largish sizes - many such as Dior go up to D-cups, Triumph goes up to E, and Valisère to F. Special prize, though, goes to Belgian house Marie-Jo. It started making a luxury plus size range in the 1990s which goes up to a very respectable H-cup.
