There was a time when an Englishman's vest was his castle. String or thermal, white or dodgy greyish, he would not be seen without it. Rather, he would not be seen with it, because it would be tucked safely away under an equally uninspiring shirt to be revealed only while watching the football in the safety of his own armchair.

Perhaps, in the more distressing cases, teamed with a pair of Y-fronts. As far as men's underwear (or outerwear) went, masculine equalled conservative and anything too colourful or stylish plunged your sexuality into serious doubt.

Superman only got away with it because he could leap tall buildings in a single bound (and because he was American). That was then. Nowadays, Superman is not the only guy who worries about the state of his undies. Across the water from the man of steel, European men are sharing his pride in an interesting pair of underpants.

The market for men's undergarments still limps well behind the corresponding women's market but men are increasingly taking an interest in how they look - perhaps encouraged by the stylish images put out by producers such as Calvin Klein and Dolce e Gabbana. And crucially, men are buying for themselves.

German men are reported to spend the most in Europe followed by the Italians, English and French. Vests are now worn regularly as outerwear and Y-fronts have - mercifully - been joined by a variety of other styles.

Boxers, boxer-briefs, briefs, thongs - they're all out there. Boxer briefs, now the market leader, are a flattering choice for any man and they're more practical support-wise than the looser boxers. The latter do come with the advantage of being considered rather sweet by women. However, boxer-briefs win on this side too because they come with the associations of all those groundbreaking Calvin Klein ads - put them on and women will think you're that curly blond haired guy everyone was going on about last year. Briefs, or Y-fronts, or tighty-whities, are declining in popularity, perhaps due to teen memories of the wedgies they facilitated. Speaking of which, thongs are perhaps excusable when sported for their original purpose of athletic support, or for the aesthetic avoidance of visible pant line. But there is always the more daring, and somehow more stylish, option of no pants at all - inexplicably (unless I'm missing something) termed commando.
