The first ones may well have been the bands of material which female Roman athletes wore when they were throwing the javelin or running away from lions (Probably. And the last thing you would need then would be the distraction of an unsupported bosom). But it was this century that the garment came into its own when it gradually took over from the constraining corset – which was also first seen in ancient times.
It’s not known exactly who invented the bra as we know it today. There are several claimants to the crown. Among them are Herminie Cadolle, nineteenth century entrepreneur, exhibition frequenter and founder of French lingerie giant Cadolle. Also in the running is Mary Phelps Jacob (aka Caresse Crosby) who took the existing bras of the early twentieth century and revolutionized them by making a bra which was softer and more comfortable, but also acknowledged the female shape by being shorter than its predecessors and allowing for separation between the breasts.
Since then the bra has progressed, via the memorable triumphs of construction worn by Jane Russell, to the lightweight and delicate creations we enjoy today. The bra’s development has been aided by constant improvements in fabric technology. These innovations include the invention of synthetic materials and moulding techniques.
And if necessity is the mother of invention, the bra is as good a social barometer as any – necessity, in the present day case, is for sexy, pretty bras which are bought and chosen by women for themselves. Some people would say that underwear – any female underwear – is a form of social control. But there’s no doubt that the days of heavy, imprisoning foundation wear which squeezed the female shape into a form designed primarily to be attractive to men are gone. The closest things we wear now are shaping underwear, push up bras and the odd corset. But all of these are sported today by choice, not social convention. And happily, today’s bras are still attractive to men.
There are hundreds of sources of good bras today, from high street stores to lingerie chains to independent designers to the big fashion houses. The key is to know what to look for. Never buy a bra without trying it on first. Remember that cup size and back size go up proportionately so the cup on a 34 C will be bigger than the cup on a 32 C. When you’re trying it on there are several pointers to a good fit. First, look for a cup which does not press into your chest and which sits snugly against your torso at the bottom. Then make sure the straps do not dig in. And check that the back strap does not ride up (try it on the loosest hook to give yourself room for change). Then you’re ready to go!
