Guess how many women wear the wrong bra size? Nope? Around 80%, would you believe. And chances are that we've all worn the wrong bra size at some point because there's no such thing as a perfect fit unless you get bespoke lingerie.

The thing is, every breast (literally every breast - no bosom is totally symmetrical) is a different shape and size and the best we can do is get a close approximation. But that's a good compromise - there are so many shapes and styles out there, today more than ever, that a little time and effort will produce wonders.

Here are a few basic guidelines. Firstly, bear in mind that cup size and back size increase together. The cup on a 36B bra is larger than a 34B, so when the cup fits but the back is too big, try a larger cup size with slightly smaller back size. It sounds a bit confusing but it's not once you get the hang of it - ask in the store if you're not sure.

Secondly, the strap round your chest is the main support of the bra, and should not ride up at the back. If it does, it may be because the strap is too big. Make sure that the cup size you are wearing is comfortable, and try a smaller back size, bearing in mind the first point about how back and cup sizes relate.

Thirdly, most of the women who are wearing the wrong bra size are, for some reason, wearing a cup size that is too small for them. If the bra cuts across your breasts or doesn't fit square against your chest at the bottom then the cup is too small. Once you've tried the bra itself on, try it under clothes to see what it looks like, and think about what you are planning to wear it with - close fitting T-shirts need a sheer bra with a degree of nipple protection to prevent the 'cold' showing too much, while low-cut dresses can sometimes look excellent with a bit of finely crafted bra poking out at the edges. Underwear as outerwear is great - and it looks so much better if it's snug against you. Basically, if the cup fits, wear it.
