There are few garments which make such an immediate and magnetic statement as black stockings. Worn well, they will make men melt with desire and women with grudging admiration for your nerve. Pick ones with a lacy top and wear something such as a gently slit skirt which shows the top off slightly – a subtle acknowledgement that you have gone to the trouble to put them on.

The first pair of silk stockings Queen Elizabeth I received in 1566 – from her silkwoman Mistress Montague – were black. Elizabeth loved them, and so have many other women in the centuries which have ensued (although around the time of Elizabeth wealthy European women were also wearing brighter colours such as crimson). But the wearing of black stockings through history has not always carried the erotic undertones which it has today. The current wave of interest in boudoir and vintage styles has only enhanced this trend. Bolero’s Desir range employs black fishnets to complement its lace and mesh suspender belt and briefs. Likewise Italian house La Perla’s Black Label. Triumph International, sometimes recognised rather one-sidedly only for its sports bras, has produced a range called Mystic Flower which combines crepe, tulle and lace net to create a lingerie set as sexily sheer as the stockings which go with it. That’s a long way from the Tri-Action Pulsebeat, although that bra may come in handy when you’re sweating away to achieve the right shaped thighs to go in your stockings.
