Vuarnet’s website – www.vuarnet.com
Vuarnet is one of the most famous names in designer eyewear – selling more than 20 million sunglasses all over the world up until the present day, and providing top quality protection for the eyes. They are sold through a distribution network totalling over 25000 opticians plus other point of sale locations in more than thirty countries. The company was launched over 40 years ago and what you see now in the shops or online is the product of a long period of encounters, innovations and history.
In 1957, the Skilynx lens was invented. It was the product of a meeting between two opticians – Roger Pouilloux and Joseph Hatchiguian, who at the time were working on lenses for night driving. Whilst undergoing the process of associating various surface coatings – putting dark colourings on different yet luminous glass bases – Joseph Hatchiguian found a lens that allowed people to look at the sun without being completely dazzled and also increased luminosity in darker weather. Previously to this date there was no glass with this capacity of absorption. The Skilynx lens was created from this discovery, and its remarkable properties first seduced sportsmen and followed that by seducing the general public.
One day in 1960, Roger Pouilloux and Joseph Hatchiguian happened to be at the cinema watching the news and chanced upon an interview with Jean Vuarnet following his win at the Olympic Games in Squaw Valley. Pouilloux had earlier offered his sunglasses to the French ski team free of charge and Vuarnet had used them during his race. Both men decided to get in touch with Jean Vuarnet and make a proposal for the skier to give his name to one of the makes of sunglasses produced by Pouilloux – which were called at that time the Skilynx Acier. Thus, Vuarnet sunglasses came into being.
Vuarnet were the first brand ever to use a well-known sportsman for its name and leverage off the fame that that sportsman had acquired due to his or her remarkable sporting achievements. This connection with sports has remained until the present day – in particular with the official partnership forged with the Los Angeles Olympic Games in 1984 – which saw the brand receive world recognition.
Nowadays Vuarnet like to think that they represent the world’s reference in terms of protection from the sun due to managing to maintain the tradition of quality without making any concessions and the high quality material that are used for frames and lenses. Every new collection released by Vuarnet tries to improve on their sunglasses and the continuity of the brand is ensured by applying the same continuity and quality to all that they do.
