Are Polarised Sunglasses useful?
Polarised sunglasses used to be the preserve of fishermen and boaters who used them to lower the amount of glare coming from the water on which they spent so much time. However, over the past few years, many other outdoor sports enthusiasts, drivers and wearers for general use have realised the benefits of wearing polarised sunglasses. As the popularity of this type of sunglasses has increased, so has their availability.
When you are driving, you may have noticed how the surface of the road and especially the hood of your car can cause glare to reduce your vision. This glare can be controlled now with polarised technology. In addition, people who are light sensitive, such as patients recovering from cataract surgery or those who are often exposed through windows to bright light will also benefit. Sportspeople like bikers, joggers, golfers and skiers use polarised sunglasses to eliminate glare and get a clearer view.
Many people wonder how this works. Well, it is really quite simple. The light that is reflected from smooth water or a flat road is in general polarised horizontally. In polarised lenses are vertically oriented polarisers that block the horizontally polarized light, reducing the amount of annoying and what can sometimes be dangerous glare.
Recently though there has been some debate on whether polarised lenses actually exhibit the effects claimed when they are used on snow-covered surfaces. One side suggests that polarised sunglasses work to reduce the glare that is caused by sunlight reflecting off the snow. However, some say that when you are downhill skiing one of the main vision requirements is to be able to distinguish between moguls and ice patches and normal snow, and polarised lenses may not help you do that.
Others also argue that polarised lenses may suffer from an adverse reaction with liquid crystal displays (LCDs) that are found on car dashboards or in places like the digital screens on bank ATM machines. If you view LCDs at a certain angle through polarised lenses the content on the displays can actually be invisible.
That said, there is no doubt that polarised sunglasses also offer great advantages when you are carrying out a great deal of activities and sports, and this is why many kinds of polarised lenses can be found on the market.
There are two types of polarized lenses, polarised progressive and polarised photochromic lenses. Polarised progressive lenses are best for the outdoor sporting aficionado, whilst polarised photochromic lenses are best for the person who is light-sensitive and also people who constantly change from being in dark environments to being in light environments. This is because they change from dark when they are outside to light when they are inside.
