Christian Dior’s website - Christian Dior Sunglasses
Christian Dior sunglasses are also called Dior sunglasses. So ubiquitous are the company's designer products that it is well known both by its full name and just half the name (using the surname). Christian Dior has a reputation as one of the greatest couturiers of the past century, and it has been the case since 1947 when he launched his very first collection – called the “New Look”. When the New Look was launched it celebrated opulence and ultra-femininity, with rounded shoulders, a very full skirt and a cinched waist. In 1947 this came as very welcome after many years of fashion needing to be put on the back burner due to most people needing to wear civilian and military uniforms with obvious sartorial restrictions as well as fabric and clothing shortages. Christian Dior didn’t just offer a new look, it actually offered a new outlook.
Christian Dior himself was born and then raised in Normandy in the north of France. When he was ten years old he moved with his parents to Paris. Like Miuccia Prada, Dior studied political science at university, but unlike Prada he then had to serve in the military. Once this was finished, Dior returned to Paris and started to sell sketches, which was the beginning of his design career. Eventually he was spotted by the designer Robert Piquet, who hired him in 1938. Just as he was starting his career with Piquet though, World War 2 broke out, and Dior was back in the military in the South of France. However, he came back to Paris in 1941 to work for Lucien Lelong at his much larger design house. As his reputation grew, he acquired backing from textile manufacturer Marcel Boussac who backed him in 1946 in opening his own fashion house.
Probably the main theory behind the building of the Christian Dior legend was that he was seen as one of the people that helped to restore postwar Paris from its beleaguered state to being the capital of fashion. Throughout this period his collections had a theme. Spring 1947’s theme was “Figure 8”suggesting a flattering female silhouette, and in 1953 there was “Tulip” with some floaty and flowery prints and in 1955 “A-line” with an undefined waist and smoother silhouette that widened once over the hips and the legs. Dior was also moving into menswear, so both women and men had Christian Dior fashions as part of their wardrobe.
In 1948, with partner Jacques Rouet, Dior became the pioneer within the fashion business of licence agreements for his stockings, perfumes and fur, generating revenue and fame. Although he died in 1957, Christian Dior’s influence still lives on. Christian Dior sunglasses are a fine example of this.
