Reebok prides itself on having been established for the simple reason that runners and athletes wanted to run faster and perform better. Their incredible range of sports equipment, shoes and footwear certainly testifies to this mission statement, as does the long list of sporting champions – both men and women – who choose Reebok over all its competitors.
Indeed, Reebok’s designs and technology have come a long way since the inception of parent company J. W. Foster & Sons in the 1890s. Joseph William Foster set up a family business that went on to make shoes for many of the top athletes at the 1924 Olympic Games. It was not until 1958, however, that J. W. Foster began to transform from a small family business into the giant it has become today. Foster’s grandsons named their offshoot company Reebok after a type of gazelle native to Africa.
But Reebok is more than just a manufacturer and retailer of sports shoes. The company was right on the front line when aerobics suddenly jumped onto the exercise scene in the early 1980s. Reebok’s Freestyle shoe was created specifically for women, who were beginning to get more involved in sport and exercise due to the new cult of aerobics. By recognising that women’s shoes were a whole different science to men’s shoes, Reebok has been credited with introducing millions of women to sport, and, by making trainers a universal commodity, encouraging the rise of the trainer as acceptable social footwear.
It is not just aerobics that enjoyed a significant leap in popularity as a result of Reebok’s timely shoe designs; the company also jumped onto the step aerobics bandwagon in the early days, rebranding the sport Step Reebok, a phenomenon that took the world by storm in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
It was actually not until the early 1990s that Reebok shifted its focus more towards general sports and sportswear, as opposed to strictly exercise and fitness. Branching out into a number of popular sports, such as football, basketball and tennis, Reebok embraced sportspeople the world over and garnered a truly international appeal. Nowadays, the company has an impressive list of endorsements from some of sport’s best-known personalities, and its name and logo are recognised as symbols of quality in virtually every sport imaginable.
Reebok shoes are available online through many sports retailers. The choice is outstanding and the quality supreme; with a pair of Reebok shoes, it is almost impossible to think of an excuse not to exercise.
