In 1825 in the Somerset village of Street, southwest England, Cyrus Clark started tanning sheepskin rugs. In 1830 his brother James started making sheepskin slippers and the Clarks shoes brand was born. The company has a reputation for making foot friendly shoes, and this began way back in the 1800s when William Clark introduced the Hygienic line of footwear, following the natural shape and curve of the foot.
Since that period, Clarks shoes have taken full advantage of the latest technologies and styles to produce up-to-date footwear that retains the foot friendly approach of the early shoes. Some Clarks shoes have taken on iconic status, such as the Desert Boot in the 1950s, based on the boots that were sold in Cairo bazaars, and of course the Wallabee, a simple moccasin introduced in the 1960s that came back into fashion with a vengeance in the 1990s. Clarks children’s shoes also became an important range in the 1960s, setting the standard for other brands to follow.
Keeping abreast of technology paid off for Clarks when polyurethane was introduced as a material for the soles of shoes. P.U is lightweight and very hardwearing and it is the basis for many shoe ranges nowadays.
Not content with being a world leader in shoe comfort, Clarks shoes have revamped their ranges with up to the minute styles to rival the most fashionable brands. Now you can buy beautifully styled shoes with a top comfort factor as well, giving you the best of both worlds. Clarks sell an astounding nearly 39 million pairs of shoes a year in their stores, so it is no wonder that most people in the UK have at least one pair stashed away at home somewhere. Well, now is the time to get them out of the closet and give your feet a treat by wearing some extremely comfortable and well made shoes. Chances are that the style is in fashion (again) as well!
