Online security used to be a major issue for internet users and retailers, and tended to put off would-be online shoppers who felt safer sticking to their regular high street stores. Although nothing is this world is guaranteed, shopping online is much safer than people think - in fact some would argue that it's far safer than carrying your bags around the shops.
To help you decide which is best for you, here is some advice to help you shop safely on the Web.
Where to shop
Try to shop with big-name companies that you recognise, for instance many large supermarkets sell their goods through their websites as well as through their stores. If shopping from an unknown source, look at how professional the website looks. Does it have extravagant claims and over-the-top promises? Look to see whether a postal address is given. If there is a phone number, try phoning it and speak to someone to assess for yourself whether you think the company is genuine or not, or whether it exists to scam people.
Registration and privacyOften sites will ask you to register. This is so they can store your address and contact details so you don't have to enter them each time. Some will also store your credit or debit card details. When registering, choose passwords which you can remember easily but aren't too obvious. Birth dates and mothers' maiden names are easily obtainable information. A mixture of letters and numbers is best as it is harder to work out. Check their privacy policy. This means that they should promise not to pass your details onto anyone else and they should store the details securely so outsiders can not access them.
Paying onlineSecure servers often are often indicated by an 's' after http in the address, ie http://etc. This means they have extra encryption to protect information you are sending, such as credit card details. Using a credit card can limit your liability if there is a problem. Keep records of any transactions: some stores email you a confirmation receipt, or suggest you print the final screen as a receipt.
Terms and conditionsCheck the site's terms and conditions before purchase. If paying by credit or debit card, check when the money leaves your account - on ordering, or on delivery. Some allow you to pay in person when the goods are delivered. Check whether there are any delivery charges or whether VAT is included in the price stated. If when the goods arrive, there are unexpected charges or taxes, you are free to accept or refuse delivery. Check their returns policy, so if the item needs to be returned for whatever reason, find out who would pay for it.
