Home shopping parties are an appealing idea: a representative from the company comes round to the host's home and sells products directly to the host or hostess and his or her guests. The rep can work their own hours, sell to family and friends and get commission from the sales.
The host usually gets some sort of incentive such as freebies or a discount on goods they purchase, and will usually be required to guarantee that a certain amount will be spent. The general idea behind it is that the host and his or her guests get to shop in a party atmosphere at home with their friends.
Home shopping parties have been taking place since the 1930s, allowing direct sales of jewellery, clothing, household goods and loads more. However the concept of home shopping parties really took off with Tupperware, the brand of plastic storage containers with sealed lids which was introduced in 1946. Women would go round to their customers' homes to sell them Tupperware: this gave them the opportunity to demonstrate their wares to housewives in their own homes. Groups of women would get together at each others houses for these Tupperware parties and relished the opportunity to chat and have a break from the monotony of being at home on their own doing household chores.
During the 1980s lingerie parties became popular. Women can get together and select their purchases over a glass of wine. Sales reps have samples and catalogues with them and the customers place their orders at the end of the evening. Vendors have now expanded their range to include toys and accessories. Home parties give customers a chance to look at what is being sold, which is an advantage over catalogue shopping. Sales reps can give demonstrations. Lingerie parties are a good idea for hen parties and are usually entertainment value.
The latest craze in home shopping parties are Botox parties where the upper-middle class can have Botox injected into their faces in front of all their friends to smooth away wrinkles while sipping champagne. Botox stretches out the muscles in the site of the injection, relaxing the area so wrinkles and lines are smoothed out. Botox parties became popular in the UK in 2000 and have now spread to the US. Botox is legal for trained doctors to use and the treatment lasts for a few months.
Very few people become rich selling goods directly to their customers at home parties, but it does suit people who want flexible working conditions and they can be a good idea for a party if looking for something different to do. In addition, the host or hostess benefits from discounts off their goods.
