Online shopping malls, like real shopping malls, have a wide selection of goods for sale in one place. Online shopping malls act as portals allowing access to a wide range of products, goods and services such as: insurance, travel, jobs, flowers, gifts, books, electronic goods, clothing, cars, music, art, financial services, etc.

Some of these websites allow you to compare prices across different online stores for different products. Usually products and services can be browsed by category, or there should be a facility for searching a specific item throughout the site. If searching for a specific term, or brand name, it is worth trying a few different variations, for instance plurals, alternative spellings or synonyms. For instance if wanting to buy a 'dustbin', also try the term 'wastepaper bin', 'dust bin' 'waste-paper bin' or even just 'bin'.

Online shopping directories list online shops in categories, for instance, a directory specialising in clothing and fashion will list online stores selling lingerie, teen fashion, ladies' clothing, men's clothing etc. Often directories contain listings of websites that have been looked at by someone before being included, but do not expect that the online directory can vouch for the sites listed in their directory. Often directories should give a brief description of each site listed, which is useful for the website user. Directories tend to focus on a specific area such as flights or underwear, but can list categories of different types of goods, making the same as online shopping malls.

Online auctions allow people to get rid of their junk and pass it on to someone else, or for the purchaser to obtain some rare or unusual item they couldn't get elsewhere such as Charles and Diana memorabilia or early editions of annuals and magazines. There are usually some restrictions on what can and can't be sold, but mainly anything goes. Information is given on what is being sold, how much time is remaining, current bids, information about the seller and payment information such as post and packaging. Purchasers can type in their bid and watch the auction proceed real-time. When the time allotted for selling the item runs out, the highest bidder purchases the goods. Items are divided up into categories, or you can search for an item if there is something specific you are after. Sellers are charged a fee by the site but buyers do not have to pay anything to the site. Any bid is binding and has to be stuck to. It is possible to put a reserve price on an item.

When purchasing online, check what is included in the price and what isn't, ie, delivery charges, tax, post and packaging etc. Remember to check how and when the item will delivered, the returns policy and payment method. Many websites accept payment online by credit card.
