If you'd have asked me a few years ago if I thought the world of online food shopping would take off, I'd have laughed you out of the greengrocers...surely people like to handle and select their food themselves? No? Well seemingly not...

It looks like 21st Century living has taken its toll on the average housewife/ husband, and they are now much more content to sit at home and order their shopping on the internet. And who can blame them? I'd much rather let some supermarket worker on minimum wage select my organic chicken thighs and carb-free rolls - I'm far too busy buying underwear and msning my friends!

But I do have one issue...what about the fresh fruit and vegetables? I don't know about you, but it can take me five attempts to find the perfectly ripened avocado - so how can I trust somebody else to do it?

Customers like to be able to select their own produce by colour, feel and smell. Or maybe it's just me. Perhaps if someone is used to purchasing fresh produce from a certain vendor and the quality of the food is always good, they can feel comfortable with buying goods from them online. Boxes of organic fruit and vegetables have been delivered to homes round the UK for a few years now before people were used to ordering food through the Internet, so this is really only the next step in the process.

Dried and tinned goods are pretty standard so it is a good idea to do a weekly or monthly shop for non-perishable goods through the Internet and to purchase fresh fruit and veg as and when required.

Personality can also be another factor in online shopping. Some people prefer the spontaneity of being able to pop into a local shop on their way home from work and select whatever they feel like having for dinner.

Customers can purchase food through supermarket websites: online supermarket shopping includes household goods, toiletries and other items generally available at supermarkets. Specialist food websites sell different types of food: organic being particularly popular online; vegetarian; gourmet; Mediterranean ; Asian; and delicatessen food among others. There are websites that cater for those with a sweet tooth selling fudge, sweets, cakes and bakery items. Food for those with specific allergies can be bought through websites, for instance lactose-free food, or gluten-free.

Some sites list restaurants in your local area where you can find take-away food: pizza, Chinese, Indian etc. There are online restaurant guides which review restaurants, and you can look at restaurants in your area and even book a table online.

Food should be available for delivery the next day or even the same day if the order is placed before a certain time. Issues that need to be looked into are how fresh certain types of food are when they are delivered - for instance fresh fish and seafood, or vegetable produce. It may be worth looking into how far away the food is being delivered from, particularly for farm produce, or fresh seafood if ordering from a central area. Also do they have refrigeration on the delivery vans for goods which need to be kept cold? If travelling long distances in the summer to deliver the goods, this is important.
