The standard width for men’s feet is D. Your feet may well be wider or narrower than the average shoe width, and so you might need to invest in some wide fitting shoes to make sure that your feet are comfortably dressed. For women, wide fitting shoes are usually the equivalent of about a D width, and go up to 2E. For men, a wide fitting shoe is about the equivalent of a 2E width, and sizes go up to 4E. For narrow fitting shoes, you are looking at sizes that go down to AA.
Wide shoes come in all shapes and colours, so you will not be cramped for style. You tend to find that wide fitting shoes focus on comfort, giving plenty of room for your toes and light materials that make wearing shoes as pleasant as possible. Some brands specialise in designing shoes for arthritis sufferers as well. Whether you choose to shop online or in a store, you are sure to be spoilt for choice.
How to measure foot width
To measure the width of your foot, you need to get a tape measure and measure around the foot at its widest point. This is usually just from the bone below the big toe to the bone below the little toe. If you don’t have a tape measure you could get a piece of string, cut it or mark it off at the correct length, and then measure the piece of string with a ruler.
Alternatively, stick a sheet of paper on the floor and get someone to draw around your foot while you stand on the paper. If you are drawing it yourself, it is better to sit down to do this as it is more accurate. If you have assistance, however, standing is the most natural way to measure the foot. Then when you have your drawing, you just need to measure with a ruler across the widest part of the foot to get your foot width.
Then take that measurement, reduce it by 5mm or 1/5 inch to accommodate for the space between your foot and the pencil, and use that number to work out your shoe width.
These tables will give you an idea of the shoe size you are looking at, although it is recommended you get your feet measured by a professional before ordering any shoes online, as you are unable to try them on first. The first table is for women’s shoe sizes, and the second is for men’s shoe sizes.
