Amongst lifestyle-defining clothing and footwear brands, Diesel takes a lot of beating. Despite having only been founded in 1978 – like yesterday compared to a number of other top manufacturers – Diesel has quickly become a truly desirable name in the fashion world, consistently launching new and innovative ideas in clothing, accessories and footwear.
Diesel was founded by Renzo Rossi, an Italian textile manufacturer, whose dream was to set up a design house to challenge conventional notions about style and fashion, and to turn away from the idea of shoes and clothes as mere commodities, preferring rather to come up with daring yet practical and, above all, desirable, products. Rather than constraining his team to follow a prescribed house style, he gave them free rein to see where their imagination and expertise took them. His target clients were the masses of free-thinking and individual people whose taste in clothing was an expression of freedom and independence from traditional convention. The company gradually built a name for itself by sticking to its principles, and, in 1996, opened a flagship store on Lexington Avenue in New York City. Nowadays, Diesel has close to 1500 employees and is represented in independent shops and in-store concessions the world over.
In accordance with the company philosophy, Diesel’s shoes are quite unlike any other. The designs are distinctively different, from open-backed trainers to slip-on leather ankle shoes and elegant ladies’ knee-high boots. Diesel trainers are particularly well known and popular, and the range of styles is certainly impressive. They come in a choice of unconventional colours, including lime green and sky blue, and are made from leather, suede or a combination of microfibres, depending on the style and purpose of the shoes. The majority of low-cut casual shoes are lace-up, although there is also a popular range of mules and slip-ons, as well as a selection of boxing-boot-style lace-ups.
For less casual occasions, Diesel also manufactures leather and suede boots for both men and women. With durable rubber soles and leather uppers, many of these boots are ideal for casual wear and for walking, while others are better suited to the office. For women, smarter boots come in a variety of styles, including cowboy boots, knee-high suede boots with buckle accessories, and ankle-high stiletto-heeled boots.
All Diesel shoes bear the distinctive Diesel name or logo, either somewhere on the uppers or on the underside of the sole; it is a mark of quality and mould-breaking innovation that is becoming ever more respected the world over.
