Ruby is the known as the stone of love and according to ancient lore a Ruby is capable of reconciling lovers’ quarrels. A ruby necklace can also make a special anniversary gift as it is the gemstone for the 15th and 40th year of marriage.
Rubies are one of the most prized gemstones and the most valuable members of the corundrum family. Large gem quality rubies can be more valuable than comparably sized diamonds and they are certainly rarer.
Ruby is thought to have many mystical properties, to Hindus, the Ruby is the ‘King of Precious Stones’. To them it affords all protection from enemies and guards their homes and belongings. The Burmese believed a soldier wearing a ruby inside his skin was invincible in battle, however, if the gem was to loose its luminosity, this is said to signal impending disaster.
Natural healers use ruby for headaches and to protect from psychic attack. Rubies are also used to help open a closed Sacral Chakra. However, rubies are usually associated with the Heart Chakra where they are thought to heal the heart both physically and emotionally and increase love, both given and received.
Ruby was named from the Latin word ‘ruber’ which means red. Rubies range in color from classic deep red to pink, purple or brown. The color of a ruby depends on the chromium and iron content of the stone. Bright red stones are mined in: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Vietnam. Brownish-red ruby come from Thailand. The Darker rubies are usually produced from the mines in: India, Australia, Russia and America.
Rubies are the national gemstone of Burma, where the highest grade Rubies are found. When purchasing a ruby necklace, the four C’s still apply. Color is one of the most important factors with ruby as the richer and deeper the color the more valuable it is. Clarity isn’t as important as with stones such as diamonds, because all rubies are expected to have some sort of inclusions. The cut of a ruby is up to you, they are often cut as ovals or cushion-cuts, but many other styles are available.
Beware that stones have the name ruby in their title but they are actually not a ruby at all. e.g. Adelaide ruby is a common name for almandine garnet. Until about 1800 all red gemstones were called rubies. Later this changed and many stones which were thought to be rubies were red spinel, red tourmaline, and red garnet. An example of this is the ‘Black Prince’s ruby’ in the English State Crown which is actually a red spinel.
Caring for your Ruby Necklace:
Always keep your rubies in a soft cloth or jewelry case away and make sure they do no rub together to prevent scratching. To clean, use a soft cloth to remove dirt and residues, you can also soak rubies in alcohol, vodka, or one part of ammonia to six parts water to loosen dirt. After cleaning it can be rinsed and brushed with a soft brush.
