A glow necklace is made of a plastic casing which contains fluid inside. Inside this casing, floating around in the fluid, is usually two or more brittle glass casings containing another chemical. When the outer casing is bend, the glass casings inside it break, which then releases the chemicals into the outer area. The resulting glow from the chemical reaction usually lasts between 8 or 12 hours.

Be warned, that once you activate your glow necklace you can’t actually stop it. The chemicals used in the necklace are also affected by temperature, so it will glow very brightly in the height of summer for a shorter duration and slightly dimmer but for a longer duration in the winter.

Most manufacturers claim there is nothing toxic in the chemical mix and if you do happen to break the plastic casing and spill some of the fluid onto your skin it won’t do any harm. If you did manage to get some in your eye, the effect would be similar to getting soap in there, so would just require thorough washing with water.

Manufacturers recommend keeping the necklace in its airtight foil wrapping until you plan to activate and wear it. Always store your glow necklace in room temperature or below, if they are exposed to temperatures 70 degrees Celsius or above they will become useless within a month. Most glow necklaces will have a shelf life of between two to four years.
