Every year at the Oscars, some of the world’s most famous starlets will have their necklines draped in dazzling diamonds. But it is not just women who love to be laden in diamond jewels, musician Steven Tyler reportedly splashed out $76,000 dollars for a diamond necklace.
The allure and fascination with the diamond necklace isn’t a new phenomenon. One of the world’s most famous diamond necklaces was given to Marie Antoinette by King Louis XVI. The centerpiece of the necklace was the ‘Hope Diamond’, weighing 45.52 carats and described as un beau violet because of its deep blue color. Today, the ‘Hope Diamond’ necklace belongs to the American Smithsonian Institute in Washington where it can be viewed surrounded by 16 white diamonds and hung on a chain necklace made out of a further 45 white diamonds.
Diamonds were also once believed to hold magical, mystical and medicinal properties. The ability of some diamonds to glow in the dark (phosperescence) was considered to be proof of the stone’s extraordinary powers. In the middle ages it was believed that a diamond possessed healing powers and could cure a sick person if they took it to bed and warmed it with their body.
Diamonds are the hardest substance known to man, and only a diamond can scratch another diamond. Only 80 per cent of the world’s diamonds are suitable for jewelry making which might explain why they are so expensive.
Because a diamond necklace is not an everyday purchase it pays to know what to look for when parting with your cash. Here are a few pointers: Jewelers have created a classification guide known as the 4C’s. This system determines the price of a diamond by its cut, color, clarity and carat weight.
Cut: Not to be confused with shape, cut refers to the symmetry and proportions of the stone and how much the diamond sparkles. A good cut allows the maximum amount of light to be reflected through the diamond. Cut is considered to be one of the most important features as even the most perfect diamond can appear dull if it isn’t cut correctly.
Color: Most diamonds have a brown or yellow tint and usually the most colorless diamonds are the most expensive. There are of course exceptions, with some of the extremely rare pink and blue diamonds demanding huge prices.
Clarity: This refers to the diamonds ability to produce the maximum amount of brilliance. A diamond with fewer inclusions (flaws) found inside or outside the diamond is of higher quality as nothing can interfere with the passage of light through the diamond.
Carat weight: This refers to the size of the diamond measure in carats. One carat is divided into 100 points, so that a diamond of 75 points, weighs .75 carats. Carat weight is the major factor in determining the value of a diamond.
If you're looking to purchase a diamond necklace as a special gift, you can't really go wrong with either a heart, cross or initial diamond necklace.
A diamond necklace doesn’t come cheap so it is important to know how to look after it so you can enjoy its beauty for a lifetime. Diamonds repel water but they do readily accept wax and grease and they will become dirty and dull after being exposed to skin oils, perfumes, lotions, dirt and dust. These products can adhere to the diamond’s surface affecting its brilliance and making it appear dull. To clean your diamond necklace you can use a soft-bristled brush (e.g. toothbrush) or a cloth with plain or soapy water or very mild household chemicals.
