In the middle ages it was believed that a diamond possessed healing powers and could cure a sick person if they took it to bed and warmed it with their body.

Diamonds are the hardest substance known to man, and only a diamond can scratch another diamond. Only 80 per cent of the world’s diamonds are suitable for jewelry making which might explain why they are so expensive.

Because a diamond necklace is not an everyday purchase it pays to know what to look for when parting with your cash. Here are a few pointers: Jewelers have created a classification guide known as the 4C’s. This system determines the price of a diamond by its cut, color, clarity and carat weight.

Cut: Not to be confused with shape, cut refers to the symmetry and proportions of the stone and how much the diamond sparkles. A good cut allows the maximum amount of light to be reflected through the diamond. Cut is considered to be one of the most important features as even the most perfect diamond can appear dull if it isn’t cut correctly.

Color: Most diamonds have a brown or yellow tint and usually the most colorless diamonds are the most expensive. There are of course exceptions, with some of the extremely rare pink and blue diamonds demanding huge prices.

Clarity: This refers to the diamonds ability to produce the maximum amount of brilliance. A diamond with fewer inclusions (flaws) found inside or outside the diamond is of higher quality as nothing can interfere with the passage of light through the diamond.

Carat weight: This refers to the size of the diamond measure in carats. One carat is divided into 100 points, so that a diamond of 75 points, weighs .75 carats. Carat weight is the major factor in determining the value of a diamond.
