Women first started wearing underpants in the early 1800s to keep out the cold. Originally they had to borrow their husbands' pantaloons and it was considered shameful to see a hint of undergarments beneath the full-skirted dresses women wore in those days.
By the end of the Victorian era though, it was shameful and improper not to wear knickers (so-called from knickerbockers, trousers worn by men and boys which fastened at the knee). The Can-Can, a dance involving high kicks displaying the dancers' stockings and knickers, was considered incredibly risqué. Women's lingerie was originally very popular in Paris in the 19th century and then spread throughout Europe and to the US, and was even banned in some places for a time. Women wore boned corsets, one-piece garments with whale bones sewn in to give support, that were laced up to give them small waists.
In the 1960s, women were supposed to burn their bras, considered a symbol of male oppression, to support the feminist movement. However originally bras were invented by cutting off corsets below the busts to give women more freedom of movement and remove restrictions imposed by wearing corsets. These days however, most self-respecting feminists will have a nice set of pretty undies in their draw.
Women like to have exotic and sexy lingerie for a romantic night out - both she and her partner will benefit from lingerie that is attractive and naughty. At the other end of the spectrum some women have 'period pants' or skanky old knickers that have gone grey in the wash. Some women do have lucky pants, or a favourite set of underwear for a night out. Sexy women's lingerie can be empowering to women, provided they feel comfortable with themselves. Trends in women's clothing applies to lingerie as well.
Online shopping enables women to purchase exotic underwear discreetly and conveniently. These days people often don't have time to go to the shops and shopping online fits in well with a busy lifestyle. Most good online stores have a free returns policy and some do free delivery - check before ordering though. More and more, shopping on the web is becoming a practical and realistic alternative to shopping on the high street.
If clothes are 'nothing less than the furniture of the mind made visible' (as James Laver put it) lingerie is perhaps the décor on the walls - not something that you notice straight away, but fundamental to style and ambience. When buying women's lingerie, it is therefore important not to end up with the sartorial equivalent of leopardskin wallpaper and a mirrored ceiling. How to achieve this? Knowledge, as always, is power, so if you’re prepared to spend a little time browsing through shops, catalogues and the internet you’re much more likely to find something that you will still like in six months’ time than if you buy the first thing you see. You’re also more likely to find something that fits you well – lingerie, like every type of clothing, varies in size with style and cut. Because we’re all unique, the best fit is of course going to be unique.
Take Strumpet and Pink - a Sussex-based company set up by two artists who decided to run a sideline in bespoke lingerie. Delicately decorated with flowers and ribbons, every item is different and is given its own name accordingly. But there's a price to pay for individuality - up to 200 quid unfortunately. One for a very, very special occasion. But if bespoke chiffon is out of your price range, there are plenty of alternatives. It’s a cliché, but Marks and Spencers is consistently good for lingerie, and has recently taken on the services of a former La Perla designer to add to its other top-end collections. For something a little risqué, try Myla, which has outlets in France, Italy, Japan, the US and the UK (London and Manchester). Then, of course, there's the grande (ma)dame of lingerie stores, Ann Summers. Despite being looked down on by a few of its high-fashion peers, Ann Summers has some pretty and sexy lines which you can try out in the comfort of your own home. If you’re in London and you want to have a look at a few boutiques in easy walking distance of each other, try Notting Hill. It’s home to cool shops including Agent Provocateur, Paul and Joe, Bodas and Wilma, which stocks funky designers like Frost French and Mint (as posed in by Marilyn Manson’s fiancée Dita von Teese, if you’re interested).
