One story is that Emperor Claudius cancelled all engagements and marriage to put a stop to his soldiers being reluctant to go to war because of attachments to family and loved ones. Saint Valentine was believed to have carried on marrying lovers in secret. He was supposed to have sent the first Valentine as he left a note for the jailer's daughter, with whom he become friendly, signed 'From Your Valentine', when he went off to be executed.
