We’re talking burlesque, we’re talking sexily seedy, we’re talking leopardskin negligee and suspenders after you’ve accidentally married someone in Vegas. We’re talking trashy lingerie.

But we are not talking poor quality – if you want to go trashy you don’t have to go downmarket. There are plenty of stores with a sense of humour and a sense of style, such as Frederick’s of Hollywood. It has outlets right across the US, from Alberquerque to Kalamazoo – via, of course, Hollywood – and you can also buy online. Who could say no to a rhinestone and lace bralette from the ‘Flirty and Fabulous’ collection? Or a beaded appliqué thong from ‘Masquerade Playwear’ (which also includes policewoman, sexy executive and French maid costumes – ooh la la)? And men, you don’t need to feel left out. There are silk thongs and kimonos for you, plus a nice line in animal print boxer shorts. Frederick’s also caters for plus sizes, and has some great gift ideas, including massage oil and edible undies – for men. There’s also a section of gifts for the bride to be including a bridal thong and a ‘bombshell fantasy bridal set’ (which looks like it might cause a few coronary attacks if you wore it up the aisle).

But if you’re less interested in wearing the trashy lingerie as watching other people wear it in an entertaining fashion, LA’s burlesque scene is for you. It’s very, very in at the moment. Marilyn Manson’s squeeze, Dite Von Teese, is a burlesque star (and wears her corsets well, as the hilarious photos of Mick Jagger staring at her cleavage will testify if you’ve seen them), and LA hotspots Deep and the Parlour Club are definitely the places to be seen at. Deep is the dining club of the emperor of the LA club scene, Ivan Kane, and several Hollywood heartthrobs (George Clooney, anyone?) have been spotted appreciating the entertainment. For a memorable and – well, maybe not tasteful, but definitely memorable – cabaret experience try Lucha Va Voom at the Mayan theatre if you can catch it. Its combination of Vegas go-go and masked Mexican wrestling will go down very well after a tequila or two. Past acts have included burlesque ensemble Buxoticas, featuring Kitten de Ville, who ‘takes off a lot more than her sombrero, amigos’. Viva Burlesca Classico!
