Lingerie is a rite of passage. It's one of the ways women express themselves as they become women. Teen lingerie was invented when teenagers were invented - in the 1950s. But the young have led the way before.

And the advent of the mini-skirt put paid to maxi underwear - at least until the chilly winter of 1969 froze the mini into obsolescence. More recently, high-end lingerie companies such as the cheery Princess Tam Tam have produced ranges for younger customers. However, it's obvious that on growing bodies lingerie has a temporary shelf-life, so the most important thing is comfort and fit. Cotton is a good bet, and it's well worth getting proper measurements bra-wise from the woman in the shop. And, though it's an eternal losing battle, it's worth reminding young girls that they don't have to be in a rush to grow up. Thongs and things can wait - indeed, some high street retailers have been forced to withdraw padded bras and minimal knickers designed for young teens and pre-teens. The teenage years - the years of being not quite a child, not quite a woman - are a special part of life and teen lingerie should reflect that. And some teen lingerie has been so successful that grown women have turned back to it. The success of Petit Bateau, the well-established French children's underwear brand, rocketed in the 1990s as women who could fit into its 14-18 year-old size category snapped up its colourful and comfortable picot knit vests and briefs.
