Minimising bras can make large busts look smaller: the cup covers the whole breast and flattens it slightly. Dark colours are slimming and black or dark plus size lingerie can be very flattering. Black would look inappropriate under a white dress.

It stocks bras (and other lingerie) in sizes ranging from D cups to JJ cups, and a selection of designers including Lejaby, Freya, Anita and Andres Sarda. Sarda’s University and Risk ranges are available from various stores in the US, UK and continental Europe in sizes up to G-cup. Risk was the first range Sarda designed when he took over part of the family business founded at the end of the nineteenth century by Baldomero Sarda. Risk, as its name suggests, was a departure for the brand, which had built itself on mantilla manufacture: it was young, fresh, funky, and, as we have established, generously sized. The University range manages to combine the delicacy of smaller bras with the support necessary for larger sizes – quite an achievement technically. The bras come with matching shorts, briefs or thong.

Plus size lingerie is increasingly finding its way into department stores and boutiques on both sides of the Atlantic. Macy’s in New York, the world’s biggest department store, stocks a good range of bras for the fuller figure (although their briefs are less exciting) by high-class designers such as DKNY and Japanese lingerie house Wacoal. Wacoal’s range includes a minimizer bra which goes up to 44DDD.
