Sex and the City author Candace Bushnell’s latest novel, Trading Up, is about a powerful and famous lingerie model who has had to fight her way to success. When it came out a year ago, it had a mixed reception – it was difficult to identify with the characters, some reviewers said, because of the cold and ruthless world they lived in.

But it’s tough at the top, particularly in modelling, so all credit to the real-life lingerie models who have managed it. Gisele Bundchen, for example, has a contract with Victoria’s Secret which is reputedly worth around £8 million. And she was rated by the New York post last year as one of the most powerful women in the city. That, and going out with Leonardo di Caprio, surely make being known as the ‘boobs from Brazil’ a small price to pay. Such is the fashion allure of lingerie these days that quite a few other models got in on the act at last year’s Victoria’s Secret catwalk show – Heidi Klum, Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks among them. Not to mention the case of a certain 60-ish folk singer who, while not actually modelling lingerie, was content to appear in one of the company’s adverts. The times they are a-changing.

Then there are the models who are selling lingerie, such as Elle MacPherson. Her increasingly popular Intimates range was launched in the UK in 2001 but she was selling underwear for over ten years before that in her native Australia where her company, Benidon, became the market leader. She clearly has great business sense, but it’s got to help that it’s The Body doing the flogging – even if, sadly, wearing the underwear will not automatically transform ours into hers. Caprice is another supermodel-businesswoman, and it’s not just lingerie (exclusive to Debenhams if you want to check it out). She sings and dances too. Her turns in the Vagina Monologues and the musical Rent, both in London, were well received and she’s breaking into movies. She also has a line of hair straighteners. It’s all strangely a bit depressing – why can’t models be all looks and no brains?
