Lace lingerie is popular for weddings as it has a slightly old-fashioned and romantic feel. Lace refers to the fabric style – which is where the material is threaded into open patterns like a net but finer – rather than the material used, although traditionally it was made out of cotton or silk. Black lace lingerie has always been a popular choice amongst UK women, and has been regarded as having a "more sexier" look than its other coloured counterparts.

It can have a big pattern or fine mesh effect, and can be used as a trim to add decoration to a garment for a frilly and intimate feminine feel, or the whole garment can be made of lace. Lace was very popular in Victorian times and people used to keep particularly fine pieces for years, detaching them from old garments when they wore out and attaching them new ones. There's an idea for the "something borrowed, something OLD and something new!"

Bras, knickers and teddies that are made with lace will seem almost completely see-through or the underwear can be made of cotton or silk with a lace trim around the edges of each garment. Camisoles and French knickers are often made out of satin with lace across the neckline and the bottom of the shorts. Lace trim can be a narrow strip of about a one to two centmetres in width or be a big dramatic pattern which finishes the garment off. Some styles of lace lingerie, for instance a teddy, can be made of a plain fabric such as cotton, with large lace panels for emphasis and decoration. Teddies can have a V-shaped lace panel down the front from the neckline to the stomach and lace panels up the hip to the waist to emphasis and streamline the wearer's body shape.

Cheap lace tends to be made out of nylon and can irritate your skin, but good-quality lace lingerie can be lovely and feels nicer against the skin. Do not buy very tight lacy underwear, as it will leave patterns on your skin, which will look very unattractive when you take the lingerie off. Wearing lacy lingerie under see-through clothes is not advisable as it will just look blotchy. Lace is very delicate and can tear easily so take care while washing lace items.
