Players like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton have inspired generations of teenagers to plague their parents with their attempts at emulating their favorite rock stars. Part of the guitar's popularity is that it is not expensive to buy a reasonable guitar and it is easy to learn how to play at a basic level. However as the guitarist becomes more advanced, the more complicated guitar playing gets as different techniques are required. People quickly become hooked though: it could be said that guitar devotees live to play their instruments.
America played a pivotal part in the development of the modern guitar. Acoustic guitars with steel-strings known as steel-string guitars, western guitars, or folk guitars, were developed in the States, albeit by luthiers of European origin. These had a louder, brighter sound than the traditional Spanish or classical guitar with their nylon strings. One of the earlier manufacturers, Christian Martin from Germany, started producing the famous 'Dreadnoughts', an acoustic steel-string guitar, in the 1930s. Orville Gibson's main contribution to guitar development at that time was his work on arch-top steel-string guitars. These have a contoured top to project the sound out more effectively. Other American guitar manufacturers followed in Martin's and Gibson's wake. Ovation has had the most impact on development of acoustic guitars in recent years.
The development of electric guitars, which use steel strings, began in America as well. The main difference between an electric guitar and an acoustic one is that an electric guitar requires amplification. Guitarists who were playing in big bands were starting to feel the need for additional volume from their instruments. In response to this demand, guitar makers such as Leo Fender and Les Paul started experimenting with using pickups on their guitars and using different amplification techniques. The electric guitar has since gone from strength to strength and has now outstripped the acoustic guitar in popularity with young musicians today.
For those wishing to learn how to play the guitar, it is worth trying to find a teacher and having one-to-one tuition. It is possible to pick up a certain amount from books and by trial and error but personal tuition can help a budding guitarist progress. However the most helpful thing you can do to improve your guitar playing is to practice as much as possible. It is more beneficial to practice everyday for a short while than to have a long practice session once a week. It is important to make time to practice and there is no way round it. After all, as the saying goes: 'practice makes perfect'.
