The modern guitar has evolved since the nineteenth century to become the icon it is today. One of the earlier manufacturers, Christian Martin from Germany, started producing the famous 'Dreadnoughts', an acoustic steel-string guitar, in the 1930s. Orville Gibson's main contribution to guitar development at that time was his work on arch-top steel-string guitars. These have a contoured top to project the sound out more effectively. Other American guitar manufacturers followed in Martin's and Gibson's wake. Ovation has had the most impact on development of acoustic guitars in recent years.

The development of electric guitars, which use steel strings, began in America as well. The main difference between an electric guitar and an acoustic one is that an electric guitar requires amplification. Guitarists who were playing in big bands were starting to feel the need for additional volume from their instruments. In response to this demand, guitar makers such as Leo Fender and Les Paul started experimenting with using pickups on their guitars and using different amplification techniques. The electric guitar has since gone from strength to strength and has now outstripped the acoustic guitar in popularity with young musicians today.

For those wishing to learn how to play the guitar, it is worth trying to find a teacher and having one-to-one tuition. It is possible to pick up a certain amount from books and by trial and error but personal tuition can help a budding guitarist progress. However the most helpful thing you can do to improve your guitar playing is to practice as much as possible. It is more beneficial to practice everyday for a short while than to have a long practice session once a week. It is important to make time to practice and there is no way round it. After all, as the saying goes: 'practice makes perfect'.
