Some people can pick up a song by ear alone, but having the notes and chords written down is a good reference. Guitar music can be written using classical music notation, but there are other methods of writing guitar music which are easier to learn and read. Two of these are chord charts and tablature (tab). Examples are given below.
Different styles of guitar sheet music are available - it is possible to buy the music for your favorite pop or rock songs which can be a really fun way of learning how to play the guitar, and if you know the song already, then it will be easier to learn. You don't really need to learn the traditional way of writing music unless you are intending to play classical music. However some guitarists still like to learn how to read classical music notation. This is so they can use it to write their own songs and so they can have access to guitar sheet music that isn't available in chords or tablature.
You can't tell how long the notes should be using chords or tab - this is one advantage that the classical system of music notation has. It is better using tab in conjunction with listening to a pre-recorded version of the song to get an idea of the rhythm and how it should sound. Tab guitar music can sometimes be written in different ways that doesn't follow a standard and that can be confusing, especially for a beginner.
Another factor to bear in mind when reading guitar sheet music is that it often doesn't give an indication of how the notes should be played, for instance, short and sharp, vibrato, dampened etc. There are symbols which can be used for chords and tab to indicate how the note should be played but classical music notation doesn't have these.
Guitar music: chord charts

The diagram above shows an E major chord. The vertical lines represent the strings and the horizontal lines represent the frets. The letters across the top refer to the notes each string is tuned to. The circles show the position of the fingers with 1 being the index finger.
Guitar music: tablature

The letters down the left-hand side refer to the guitar strings which should be tuned to the notes E, B, G, D, A, E with the top string being the highest note. The letters across the top are the name of the notes. The numbers on the lines refer to which frets to use, ie the first one would be the fifth fret down from the nut. If there are numbers along the bottom, these refer to which finger you should use, with your index finger being number 1 and your little finger being number 4.
