It is important for your instrument to be in tune and there are different types of guitar tuners available. If you are playing with other people then all the instruments need to be in tune with each other. If there is a piano present, then it is best to tune everyone else's instruments to that. However another tuner such as an electronic tuner or a tuning fork may be all that is available.
Electronic guitar tuners are very useful as they recognize the note you are playing and can tell you whether it is too high or too low. Some models may require you to set a dial to indicate which string is being tuned, others can recognize the pitch being played and indicate it on a LED. You will need an electronic guitar tuner with a microphone for tuning an acoustic guitar.
A tuning fork is a metal fork with two prongs which produces a note, usually A, which can be used to tune your guitar to. For tuning guitars, it is possible to buy tuning forks that produce an E for tuning the first, or top, string of a guitar to. To produce the note, tap the fork against your knee and then hold it near your ear. For a tuning fork that produces an E, tune the top string of your guitar to it and then use that note to tune the rest of the strings. If using a tuning fork that produces an A then play what would be an A on your guitar, but two octaves higher, as this note is produced on the top string with the fifth fret. This way, you can use the note to tune the top string. Another idea for a guitar tuner would be to use a recorder or pipes.
The pitches for a standard guitar with six strings are, starting from the top and working down, E B G D A E. The higher pitches need thinner guitar strings so the top string is the thinnest, working down to the thickest one at the bottom. If you have trouble remembering the notes then there are several mnemonics around to help you such as Easter Bunnies Get Drunk At Easter, or invent your own which you are more likely to remember. If you are playing on your own then you don't need the tuning to be at exactly the right pitch but the strings do have to be in tune with each other. However, if the tuning is too low, then the strings will be too loose meaning that they may rattle against the frets. If too high, they will be too tight meaning they are more likely to snap.
